Panel vs mirror closet doors: which is right for your closet?

Pick mirror doors when the room is small or dark and you'd like a full-length mirror without giving up wall space. Pick panel doors for hallways, kids' rooms and anywhere you'd rather not see your reflection or wipe fingerprints.

Most people who order closet sliding doors in Toronto already know the size they need. The harder part is deciding what the doors should be. Here's how we'd think it through, room by room.

The two door types at Buildr

Buildr Home sells two kinds of sliding closet door, both in the size that fits the width and height you enter:

Both come in 2, 3, 4 or 5 panels. Heights are 83" and 98.5", and framed mirror doors also come in 110.5" for tall openings.

Light and small rooms

This is where mirror doors earn their spot. A wall of mirror bounces light from the window back into the room, and it makes a narrow bedroom or condo den feel wider than it is. If your closet faces a window, the effect is bigger again.

Panel doors do the opposite, in a good way. They're calm and flat. In a big room with plenty of light, you don't need the extra brightness, and a solid door keeps the wall quiet.

One honest catch with mirrors: they reflect everything, including the clutter on the opposite wall and the TV at night. Stand where the closet will be and look at what's across from it before you decide.

Bedroom vs hallway

In a bedroom, mirror doors make sense. You get dressed there, so a full-length mirror is useful, and you'd probably have bought one anyway.

Hallway and entry closets are different. People walk past them all day, the light is often poor, and a mirror at the front door mostly collects handprints and boot scuffs. A panel door in white or black looks clean and asks nothing of you. For a basement rec room or home office, we'd lean panel too, unless the space has no windows and needs every bit of light it can get.

Which one fits your style?

Colour does more to the look than most people expect.

Panel doors come in white or black. Framed mirror doors come in white or black, and frameless mirror doors in white, black or silver. The mirror itself is always clear.

Framed vs frameless mirror closet doors

Framed and frameless mirror closet doors run on two different hardware systems, each with its own rails and tracks. The choice changes how the door is built and how it looks.

Framed mirror closet doors have a full metal stile on each side. The stile is the vertical frame profile that wraps the mirror's edges, and it doubles as the handle. Because the edge sits inside the stile, it isn't polished, just lightly seamed. The result is sturdy and classic, with a handle built into the door. Framed mirror comes in white or black. If the doors will get pushed around by kids, guests or tenants, framed is the practical pick.

Frameless mirror closet doors have no stile. The mirror edges are polished and left on show, so the front reads as one clean sheet of mirror. It's sleeker and more modern, and it looks more upscale. Frameless mirror comes in white, black or silver, and it's the only way to get silver. Frameless also shows the most mirror, which helps in a small room.

Our view: framed for busy family closets and rentals, frameless for a main bedroom where the look matters most. Heights are 83" and 98.5" for both, and framed mirror also comes in 110.5".

Kids and safety

If small kids will be running into these doors, panel is the easy answer. There's no glass to think about, and a ball or a toy truck won't do much to it.

Mirror doors work in plenty of family homes too. Every mirror panel has a safety film on the back that holds the glass together if the mirror breaks.

For rental units and kids' rooms, panel doors are the low-worry pick.

Cleaning

Mirrors show everything. Fingerprints, toothpaste flecks, dog nose marks. Glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth fix it in a minute, but you'll do it more often than you think.

Panel doors need a damp cloth now and then. That's it.

Price level, in plain words

Panel is the lowest-priced door Buildr makes. Mirror is one step up. Beyond that, the size, number of panels, height and frame choice all change the final number. We won't guess here. Enter your opening on the design page and you'll see the exact price before you pay.

Our take

If we had to pick for you without seeing the room: mirror for bedrooms and small, dark spaces, and panel for hallways, kids' rooms and rentals. If the budget is tight, panel wins. You can also mix them. Plenty of homes have mirror doors in the main bedroom and panel doors everywhere else.

FAQ

Are panel or mirror closet doors better?

Neither is better everywhere. Mirror doors suit bedrooms and small or dark rooms because they reflect light and add a full-length mirror. Panel doors suit hallways, kids' rooms and rentals because they're solid, simple and easy to clean.

What are the best sliding closet doors for a small room?

Mirror doors, in most cases. They reflect light and make a small bedroom or condo room feel bigger. Frameless mirror doors show the most mirror for the space.

Do you make mirror closet doors in Toronto and the GTA?

Yes. Buildr Home sells clear mirror closet doors in the size that fits your opening, framed or frameless, in 2 to 5 panels. You order on the design page and pick the doors up in the GTA. We don't install, but we can connect you with an installer.

What's the difference between framed and frameless mirror closet doors?

Framed mirror doors have a full metal stile on each side that wraps the mirror edges and works as the handle, so the edges are lightly seamed rather than polished. Frameless mirror doors have no stile and polished mirror edges, for a sleeker, more modern look. Framed comes in white or black, frameless in white, black or silver. Each uses its own rails and track.

Can I have mirror doors with kids at home?

Many families do. Every mirror panel has a safety film on the back that holds the glass together if the mirror breaks. If you would rather have no glass at all, choose panel doors.

Are mirror closet doors more expensive than panel?

Yes, one step up. Panel is the lowest-priced door Buildr makes. Enter your size on the design page to see the exact price for either before you pay.
