Sliding closet doors coming off the track? Why it happens and how to fix it

Clean the tracks, check the top hangers and the bottom guide, rehang. Six steps, one afternoon. If the mirror is cracked or the frame is bent, replace instead.

A panel door that jumps the track or drags is almost always dirt in the tracks, a loose top hanger or a bottom guide that has come out. All three are fixable in an afternoon. These steps are for panel doors, which hang from the top; mirror doors roll on the bottom.

Fix it in six steps

Two people lifting a white sliding closet door up and out of the bottom track
1. Take the door out. Lift it up into the top track, swing the bottom out of the bottom track, and lower it. Use two people.
Vacuuming grit out of a sliding closet door's bottom track
2. Clean both tracks. Vacuum the top and bottom tracks and wipe them dry. Grit and carpet fluff cause most jumps. Don't oil the track.
Tightening a screw in a sliding closet door's bottom track next to a level
3. Check the track screws. Tighten any loose screw in the top and bottom track and make sure both tracks are straight.
Top hanger with a white wheel on the top corner of a white-framed closet door panel
4. Check the top hangers. Panel doors hang from two hangers at the top. Spin each wheel, tighten the hanger screws and clamp, and set the height if your hanger has an adjusting screw.
Bottom guide in its metal bracket on the bottom rail of a closet door panel
5. Check the bottom guide. The bottom only has a guide, no wheels. Make sure it hasn't popped out and its bracket is tight.

6. Rehang and test. Wheels into the top track first, then the guide into the bottom track. Slide it end to end a dozen times.

Repair or replace?

A new kit replaces the lot: new panels, top track, bottom track and fascia, in the size that fits your opening. FAQ

Why do my sliding closet doors keep coming off the track?

On a panel door the usual causes are dirt in the tracks, a top hanger whose screw or clamp has worked loose, a worn hanger wheel, or a bottom guide that has popped out or whose bracket is loose. Find which one with the checks in this guide before you replace anything.

Can I fix a sliding closet door that came off the track myself?

Usually, yes. Lift the door out with a helper, clean both tracks, check the track screws, check the top hangers and the bottom guide, then rehang it. Mirror doors are heavy and the glass can break, so use two people.

Why is my sliding closet door hard to slide?

Dirt in the tracks, a dented track, a hanger wheel that has seized or worn flat, or a hanger set too low so the door rubs the bottom track or the other door. Clean the track first; it fixes more sticking doors than anything else.

Should I oil the track?

No. Oil attracts dust and turns into grit. Clean the track dry and, if your kit's maker allows it, use a small amount of dry silicone-based lubricant on moving parts.

Can I buy new hangers or a new track from Buildr Home?

No. Buildr Home sells complete kits (door panels, top track, bottom track and fascia, in the size that fits your opening), not loose hangers, guides or parts. If it is only a hanger, a guide or a track, a replacement part from the hardware maker often fixes it. If it is the doors, a new kit is the next step.

When should I replace sliding closet doors instead of repairing them?

Replace when a mirror is cracked or chipped, the frame is bent or loose, the doors never fit the opening properly, or the tracks are so worn or bent that new hangers would not last. A cracked mirror is a safety problem and is not worth repairing.

How do I know which size to order?

Measure the opening, not the old door: width at the top, middle and bottom, height at left, middle and right, and use the smallest of each. See the measuring guide and the sizes and prices guide.
